There are plenty of different kinds of vegan desserts that you can whip up easily, should you be in the mood for a sweet treat.
One particularly delicious vegan snack is a cacao and vanilla waffle, which could be the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy, vegan-friendly way.
With this in mind, we are going to be looking at how to go about making your very own vegan cacao and vanilla waffles with a simple, easy-to-follow recipe. Let’s get started.
Please note that a waffle maker is suggested for this recipe, though we will be looking at some alternative methods of making waffles if you do not have one.
Ingredients
Before we get into the main recipe, let’s first go through the ingredients that you will need to have to hand before you are able to get started on making your waffles.
- Buckwheat Flour: 150g or one cup
- Coconut Oil: This is for greasing up the waffle iron or the pan.
- Vanilla Extract: One teaspoon for the vanilla waffle flavor!
- Cinnamon: Half a teaspoon
- Chia Seeds: One tablespoon
- Water: Three tablespoons
- Unsweetened Almond Milk: One and one quarter cups
- Cacao Powder: Two tablespoons
- Maple Syrup: Three tablespoons
Recipe
- First, grab your tablespoon of chia seeds and put them into a large mixing bowl.
- Cover the chia seeds with three tablespoons of water and allow them to soak for around five to six minutes.
- After covering the seeds with water, start preheating your waffle maker.
- When the water and chia seeds mixture is combined to the point where it gains an egg-like texture, begin adding the cinnamon, maple syrup, vanilla extract, almond milk, and cacao powder.
- Stir the mixture as thoroughly as possible, until all the ingredients are well combined to form your batter.
- Begin to lightly coat your waffle machine with coconut oil, as this will ensure that the batter doesn’t stick to the machine too much as the waffles cook. Be careful not to burn yourself on the waffle maker when you do this, as it should be starting to get warm.
- Carefully pour your cacao and vanilla batter into the waffle maker.
- Cook them for as long as you want to, though if you want your waffles to be a little bit crispy, leave them in the waffle maker for a little bit longer.
- And there you have it! Your vegan vanilla and cacao waffles should now be ready to enjoy.
- To finish off your waffles, drizzle on some maple syrup and add some fresh fruit.
No waffle maker? No problem! We have some instructions for you so that you can go about making your waffles even if you don’t have a waffle maker.
Making The Waffles With A Grill-Pan
For this alternate cooking method, you will need a grill pan as well as a pastry brush, and a spatula.
The method of creating the vanilla and cacao batter will remain the same, so don’t worry about that part of the recipe.
- Prepare your grill pan by placing it on the burner over medium heat. To test the pan to make sure that it is hot enough, sprinkle some drops of water onto it. If the water begins to dance and sizzle, then your pan is ready.
- Grab your pastry brush and brush the warm grill with coconut oil. Again, make sure that you are careful and that you don’t burn yourself!
- Start to spoon the vanilla and cacao vegan waffle batter into the grill pan and spread it into a circle. You can spoon the batter into larger or small circles onto the grill. The choice is yours, depending on the size of the waffles that you want to make.
- Turn the burner from medium heat to medium-low heat. By doing this, your waffles will form ridges more efficiently, as well as make them crispy without burning them.
- Allow your batter to continue to cook until you see bubbles begin to form on the top. The bottom of the waffles will be set, and the edges will also look dry.
- Use your spatula and flip your waffles. When you flip them, try to make the lines face the same way that they were facing before you lifted the waffles from the pan. This is a little tricky, but don’t worry if you can’t get it right, as it won’t affect the taste of your waffles.
- To make waffle-like ridges, use the back of the spatula to press down lightly so that your batter will start to stick to the ridges of the pan. This should get the batter to begin forming around the ridge.
- Keep cooking until this side of the waffle is also cooked.
- Transfer the waffles to a wire rack and allow them to cool.
- You should now have some pretty authentic-looking waffles without the need for a waffle maker!
Making The Waffles With Waffle Molds
You can also make waffles with silicone waffle molds as an alternative method of cooking them.
- Place your waffle batter into the waffle molds, then put the batter-filled molds on a baking sheet.
- Once your oven is preheated to about 430 degrees, bake the waffle batter for around 10 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and use gloves to remove the waffles from the waffle mold to avoid burning yourself.
- Place the formed waffles back into the oven -without the molds- to let them cook a little more and make them crispy.
- Your waffles are now ready to eat!
