With all this in mind, this article will be looking into everything you need to know about making a chocolate smoothie.

Not only is this healthy smoothie delicious, but it is also incredibly easy to make.

Below, you will find all the ingredients you need to make this recipe, and why:

  • Banana – Preferably frozen banana. Although, you can also use fresh bananas; just make sure to toss in a handful of ice cubes with them. This adds some sweetness, as well as creaminess and thickness to the smoothie consistency.
  • Cooked sweet potato – Did you know that chocolate and sweet potato are a match made in heaven? While it is an unlikely pairing, you won’t be disappointed! This makes the smoothie creamy and extra velvety while adding lots of nutrition and sweetness. Alternatively, you could include pumpkin or yam.
  • Cocoa powder – This is needed to make the smoothie chocolaty. Alternatively, you can also use cacao powder.
  • Flax seeds or ground flaxseed – Flax seeds are packed with healthy fat and fiber. Alternatively, you can also use chia seeds, or omit them entirely.
  • Non-dairy milk – Any variety works well.
  • Maple syrup or a date – These net ingredients are completely optional. Although, if you’re looking for some added sweetness then maple syrup or date works well.

For this recipe, you will also require a blender. If you’re an avid smoothie-maker, then purchasing a quality, high-speed blender is a good investment. You’re guaranteed deliciously smooth smoothies every time!

How To Make A Healthy Chocolate Smoothie

The process of making this vegan chocolate smoothie couldn’t be easier even if you tried! It’s as simple as tossing all the ingredients (except the maple syrup/ date) into the blender and blitzing until smooth.

Then taste your smoothie before adding the optional maple syrup/ date for a little extra sweetness. Once you’re happy, serve straight away!

Freezing Bananas

To make sure you always have bananas on hand to make this chocolate smoothie, make sure to keep some frozen!

If you have some bananas sitting around on your countertop, you may begin to notice them turning ripe with brown/ black spots. Don’t throw them out!!!

These are perfect for your smoothies. Instead, simply break the banana into three or four pieces, laying them on a lined baking tray. Then put them in the freezer!

Once hard, transfer them to a freezer or container, and, voila! You have frozen bananas suitable for all your smoothie creations.

Cooking Sweet Potato

  • In the oven – If you’re already cooking something else in the oven, then you can simply add your sweet potatoes to the mix. Start by cutting the potatoes in half, then lay them cut-side down on a baking tray and cook until soft. Depending on the size, this should approximately take 40 minutes. Once cooked, store in an airtight container and the fridge for up to one week.
  • In the microwave – For a quicker method, cook them in the microwave. Start by using a sharp knife to pierce the potato and microwave on full power until completely cooked. Depending on the size, this should take about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • In an Instant Pot – If you’re looking to cook your sweet potatoes and forget about them, then this is the method for you.

This chocolate smoothie recipe is perfect as it is; although, if you’re looking to switch it up, you can consider reducing the content of milk for an extra thick smoothie that can be served as a smoothie bowl; top with all your favorite toppings.

Likewise, instead of sweet potato you could try pumpkin, or include some extras such as coconut, some greens, vegan yogurt, seed or nut butter, a shot of espresso, cinnamon, a handful of oats, nuts or seeds, or even some cacao nibs.

The beauty of a smoothie is that you can add whatever ingredients you like, and – most of the time – you’ll be rewarded with a great-tasting smoothie.

  • 1 frozen banana (or a fresh banana with a handful of ice)
  • 1 cup/ 240ml non-dairy milk
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • ½ cup/ 100g cooked sweet potato (or yam/ pumpkin)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or 1 date (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed or chia seeds (optional)

  • Place all the ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth. After tasting, decide whether to include the maple syrup/ date.
  • Serve immediately.
  • Enjoy!

  • For a thicker consistency, limit, or even omit, the amount of milk in the smoothie – perfect for smoothie bowls!
